Default DBPF file format question..
Random question and I know this might be the wrong place to ask it, but does anyone know if Maxis explicitly owns the DBPF file format? As in, no other game is allowed to use it? I know it is used in many Maxis games but I'm unsure of any others. Did Maxis create it specifically? Does anyone know?

And why? Because I dared to dream of my own race of atomic monsters,
atomic supermen with octagonal shaped bodies that suck blood.... ~

According to SimsWiki and other sources the DBPF format is proprietary to Maxis/EA, so presumably it was developed by or for Maxis and cannot be used by other companies without permission.
